In My Garden: Red Hot Poker

Also known as Torch Lily, the name is due to the shape and color of its flower clusters. The leaves are reminiscent of a lily, and the flowerhead can reach up to five feet in height. There are many varieties of torch lily, and they bloom at different times during the growing season. The flowers are red, orange, and yellow. When the lower flowers open, it is a favorite source of nectar for hummingbirds. It originates from South Africa and has been introduced as a garden plant into many parts of the world.
