Another beautiful site in Japan’s Hakone region is Lake Ashi, a crater lake known for its views of Mt. Fuji and its numerous hot springs. With Lake Ashi in the background, this picture shows one of several torii gates along the waterfront. These gates, usually made of wood and painted vermilion, traditionally mark the transition from the sacred site of a Shinto shrine or a Buddhist temple to the normal world beyond.

A Gate on the Lake
